Austin Yacht Club

Austin Yacht Club was started by Dr. William Carter back in 1951. This was during an era where club members held meetings at the local public library and when membership dues were $10 a year. One of the biggest bonds that Austin Yacht Club members had was in the art of boat building. Most of the boats were built from wood, the sails were made from cotton, and the lines were made of linen. Several attempts were made at using synthetic sails, however this was many years before Dacron came onto the market, so it did not have much success due to its tendency of cracking when folded.

Races were another popular event that encouraged sportsmanship. Rules were held with a high level of conduct and seamanship. For example if you were to foul someone, you would automatically be kicked out of the race.

Cruising was another popular event. Every two weeks members of the Austin Yacht Club would gather for an overnight sail. One of the favorite destinations was a place called Arkansas Bend. Many community events are also held when the yacht club has races and other activities going on. For example the local fire department hosts a post-race BBQ, in which hundreds of people in the community attend in addition to watching the race.

In 1969 Austin Yacht Club officially got its name. It was also the same year that the current clubhouse was built. Due to a flood in 1991, the clubhouse was remodeled and built above the level of the spillway that surrounded it.

Much has changed since its inception and early days, but Austin Yacht Club is still committed to its core values of providing members the opportunity to explore, learn, and experience all that the water has the offer yacht enthusiasts.

Today the Austin Yacht Club remains as the largest yacht club in Travis County. The facility includes docks that are sheltered in two coves which fit up to 160 boats (as long as 30’). The dock can also store up to 76 board boats, which allows for easy launch access.

In addition, the facility also has 200 parking spaces which can accommodate trailered boats, including two launch ramps that can be used on a wide area of lake levels.

The Austin Yacht Club’s clubhouse is another great place to check out. It overlooks the swimming pool area as well as the lake and is a popular place for people to rent out for social events and parties. The clubhouse is also serviced with free WiFi and high speed internet access.

The clubhouse is not the only place that members and guests can rent out. The facility also has seven camp shelters and five cabins on site. The cabins come with air conditioning and also have a full kitchen facility. Those in RVs can also use hookups to connect to the camp site. There are also numerous barbecue grills and picnic tables, which make it easy to have a great time.
